SALARY
$70,000 - $80,000 Annually, Full-time Exempt

SUMMARY
Peace Over Violence is seeking a Senior Family and Immigration law staff attorney that has a demonstrated interest in working with survivors of domestic and sexual violence. The ideal candidate will work well in a team environment with other attorneys, paralegals and advocate staff, and employ a holistic approach to legal services: one which values client empowerment, provide trauma informed care, support and resources via 24- hour hotline, follow up and advocacy. The attorney will primarily focus on Family law and Immigration law issues, but the practice will extend to public benefits, advocacy with law enforcement, training, and community engagement. The attorney will be responsible for providing direct family and immigration legal services to survivors of domestic and sexual violence. The attorney is expected to work under direct supervision of the Managing Attorney. 

Responsibilities and Duties: 

Client Services/ Family and Immigration Law:  

  • Provide direct legal services in family law (e.g., restraining orders, divorce, custody, paternity, and support matters) and immigration law (e.g., VAWA, U Visa, T Visa, SIJS, naturalization). 

  • Conduct legal intakes and assessments to determine appropriate legal remedies and develop individualized case strategies. 

  • Staff legal clinics on topics relevant to survivors, such as protective orders or immigration relief. 

  • Participate in and support safety planning, crisis counseling, and linkage to appropriate resources and referrals. 

  • Provide legal support and advocacy via in-person meetings, follow-up communication, and the 24-hour hotline. 

  • Represent clients in immigration matters, including VAWA petitions, U Visas, T Visas, SIJS, adjustment of status, and naturalization. 

  • Prepare and file petitions and applications for affirmative immigration relief, including but not limited to: VAWA self-petitions, U and T visa applications, SIJS, DACA, Naturalization and Adjustment of Status 

  • Represent clients before USCIS and other administrative agencies; assist in preparation for USCIS interviews and ensure client understanding of legal processes. 

  • Assist clients, volunteer attorneys, and legal services staff in drafting, reviewing, and filing immigration applications and supporting documentation. 

  • Advocate with law enforcement agencies and USCIS on behalf of clients when needed. 

  • Engage in appellate work related to family law or immigration matters, as appropriate. 

  • Conduct legal intakes and needs assessments, and maintain regular client contact and timely updates. 

  • Ensure all filings meet deadlines and procedural standards; keep detailed case notes and time logs in the agency’s case management system. 

Program Administration & Coordination  

  • Maintain accurate and timely records, including detailed case notes and timekeeping, in the agency’s case management system. 

  • Ensure compliance with all confidentiality protocols, grant requirements, and organizational policies. 

  • Devise and implement internal policies to ensure the efficient and effective delivery of legal services in collaboration with the Managing Attorney. 

Community Engagement & Advocacy  

  • Represent Peace Over Violence in local family law or domestic violence councils, advocacy coalitions, and policy working groups. 

  • Support and deliver community 

Qualifications

  • J.D. from an accredited law school; admitted to practice in California and in good standing. 

  • 3–5 years of experience in family and/or immigration law with a demonstrated focus on supporting survivors of trauma or marginalized populations. 

  • Experience preparing and filing VAWA, U visa, SIJS, DACA, and naturalization applications. 

  • Familiarity with SIJS family court proceedings and ability to handle predicate order litigation. 

  • Commitment to trauma-informed care, racial and gender justice, and survivor empowerment. 

  • Strong legal writing, communication, and organizational skills. 

  • Ability to work collaboratively across teams and independently manage a caseload. 

  • Bilingual proficiency (especially Spanish) strongly preferred 

  • Flexible Schedule to fit varying shifts; capacity to work some weekends and/or evenings 

  • Some travel may be required 

  • Demonstrated knowledge of crisis intervention, domestic violence, child abuse/neglect, stalking, elder abuse intervention, experience in Crisis Counseling 

  • Complete Peace Over Violence’s 82-hour counselor/advocate training or its equivalent 

  • Ability to work well with a diverse group of people, comfortable with L.A. & Pasadena communities. 

  • Capacity to balance and provide self-care while meeting the demands of a crisis center 

  • Demonstrates professionalism, initiative, and the ability to work independently while building effective, empathetic, and non-judgmental relationships with clients, families, volunteers, staff, and members of criminal justice and social service agencies.
