Job Description

City Cast DC is hiring a sharp, thoughtful and omnivorous writer to report for our site and work on our daily newsletter — the morning read tens of thousands of Washingtonians rely on to understand what's happening in their city. The newsletter is our front door, and we're looking for someone who can shape it day after day with clarity, voice, and a deep understanding of what residents care about. It would be nice if you were funny, too.

While writing and assembling the newsletter will be the core of this role, you will also have the opportunity to report and write original stories for City Cast DC. You'll work closely with the Executive Editor and Managing Editor to program segments, surface the stories that matter most, and ensure every issue feels essential. This position will report to the executive editor.

The ideal candidate is a strong, efficient writer with sound news judgment, a curiosity about D.C., a hunger to be where the action is, and the discipline to hit a daily deadline. You're comfortable distilling a complex story into a tight newsletter blurb and chasing down original reporting when the moment calls for it. Experience in local D.C. news is a plus — but not as essential as flexibility, enthusiasm, and the ability to roll with it in a startup environment.

Application Due: Friday May 29

What You’ll Do

  • Research and write key portions of the daily City Cast DC newsletter, staying on top of D.C. news, trends and conversations and taking over writing the newsletter on occasion
  • Assemble and fact check the newsletter each day, ensuring it is accurate and ships on time
  • Plan and shape weekly newsletter segments
  • Regularly review analytics and identify ways for the newsletter to grow
  • Pitch and report original stories for City Cast DC that appear in the newsletter and on the site

What You Bring

  • 1–2 years of prior experience in journalism, newsletters, or a closely-related editorial role
  • A working knowledge of D.C. — its neighborhoods, politics, culture, and the things locals actually care about
  • Strong writing and editing skills, with a clear and engaging voice
  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • Comfort with daily deadlines and the discipline to produce consistent, high-quality work
  • Sound news judgment and a curiosity for what's happening across the city

Benefits

The Assistant Editor will report to the Executive Editor of City Cast DC. This position is full-time, with excellent benefits. The annual salary range is $60,000 to $80,000 depending on experience. You must be local, though work will be primarily remote. City Cast is an equal opportunity employer committed to excellence through diversity, which involves attracting talented people from diverse backgrounds and traditions. Read about our mission and core values here . We encourage everyone to apply.
