Responsible for developing, implementing, modifying and evaluating music therapy services designed to restore, maintain or improve cognitive, physical, emotional and social functioning of children, teens and young adults and their families, pertinent to units assigned within Pediatrics through the Child Life and Arts for Healing Department.

• 1. DIRECT AND INDIRECT PATIENT CARE 1. Develops, plans, implements and evaluates music therapy services in both individual and group sessions to meet assessed patient needs, consistent with Child Life and Arts for Healing Department mission and goals. 2. Uses standardized processes to assess individual patient strengths and needs, determine treatment plans and patient goals and provide music therapy services to patients of all ages and/or family members, in individual and group settings, to restore, maintain or improve the patient and family's social, emotional, physical and cognitive function 3. Develops and modifies music therapy interventions to meet the unique needs of a varied pediatric patient population and their families, and adapts interventions to developmental age, physical limitations or disabilities and psychosocial needs. 4. Develops and sustains therapeutic relationships with patients, parents, and families from a variety of cultural, social, economic and religious backgrounds. 5. Demonstrates creativity and skill in the provision of music therapy interventions. 6. Assures that the patient care is safe for children and the environment of care complies with regulatory standards for safety and infection control. 7. Creates a safe and nurturing patient and family-centered environment in which children and families can feel comfortable with creative expression and communication. 8. Seeks opportunities to expand own professional knowledge through continuing education and maintain active certification through American Music Therapy Association and other appropriate educational sources. 9. Researches and presents evidence-based best practices to improve quality of patient care.
• 2. COMMUNICATION, COLLABORATION AND TEAMWORK 1. Provides clear, concise, and timely documentation of individualized music therapy treatment plans and interventions and the patient's and family's response to treatment in accordance with individualized goals in alignment with department and hospital guidelines. 2. Collaborates closely with the multi-disciplinary team, participating in team meetings, rounding, and other collaborative efforts to improve patient experience and care. Receives referrals, assesses patients, makes recommendations, consults and formulates music therapy treatment goals in support of both the treatment teams? and the patient/family's objectives. 3. Provides education concerning music therapy and therapeutic benefits to hospital staff, volunteers, students, potential funders, and the community. RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Assists with the orientation and coordination of staff, students, volunteers or others as required. Participates in Child Life staff meetings, Arts for Healing team meetings and other departmental meetings as required. 2. Routinely communicates with Child Life leadership per departmental policy; and reports pertinent information on a timely basis. 3. Attends regularly scheduled supervision meetings, division, and staff meetings as required. Participates in appropriate committees and task forces. 4. Maintains competence by participating in ongoing professional development. Maintains license, certification or registration as required.
• 3. FISCAL MANAGEMENT 1. Maintains supplies, technical equipment and musical instruments for music therapy services and provides assessment of material needs. Collaborates with Child Life leadership as needed for supplies. 2. Reports malfunctioning or missing equipment to supervisor and removes hazardous equipment from use. Provides written summary of program content, theory and budget as required for grant writing and program promotion in collaboration with Arts for Healing manager. 3. Contributes to cost containment by utilizing time efficiently; working within scheduled hours as assigned; obtains prior approval for changes to work schedule.
• 4. ADMINISTRATION OF PROGRAM 1. Participates in quality assurance and quality initiatives including collecting, maintaining and analyzing quality and productivity data specific to music therapy services. 2. Oversees management and storage of patient creative work related to music therapy with specific attention to safeguarding patient confidentiality. 3. Complies with hospital policies and procedures. Carries patient load that complies with productivity standards as determined by the department or hospital.

EDUCATION

Bachelors Degree in Music Therapy or equivalent as required for eligibility for certification by the American Music Therapy Association. Master's level preferred.

EXPERIENCE

Minimum 1-2 years' experience working as a music therapist with children in a healthcare environment preferred; or the equivalent of 2 year's full time experience as music therapist with children in a school or other community setting with specific expertise in working with children with special needs., Board Certified (MT-BC) by the American Music Therapy Association.

LICENSURE

AMTA board certification (MT-BC), CT licensure preferred.

SPECIAL SKILLS

Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of a variety of music therapy principles, techniques and methods and the ability to adapt interventions to address patient needs, abilities, and interests. Psychosocial needs and behaviors of hospitalized children and families with working knowledge of how to facilitate music therapy in a hospital environment with individuals and groups. Professional level of knowledge and skill in growth and development, therapeutic play, provision of coping strategies and support during hospitalization and related treatments. Understanding of the child and family effects of common childhood illnesses and injuries Skills: Competence in music performance, comfortable with singing and instrumental play on a variety of instruments. Competence in basic music technology including recording, editing, and digital instruments Strong interpersonal skills evident in the implementation of music therapy services, establishes effective professional relationships and communication with staff, patients, families, artists, media, etc. Strong time management, communication and organizational skills.

PHYSICAL DEMAND

Able to lift at least 25lbs.; must comply with appropriate OSHA, HIPAA and JCAHO standards relevant to position.

Board Certified (MT-BC) by the American Music Therapy Association. Experience in pediatric healthcare settings.
